The Underrated Joy of Having Something Small to Look Forward To

There's something rather wonderful about having something to look forward to.

And I'm not necessarily talking about a vacation, a big celebration, or some exciting life event you've had marked on your calendar for months.

I'm talking about considerably smaller things.

Like knowing there's leftover pizza in the fridge. Or that your favourite show has a new episode waiting for you. Or looking forward to getting home after work, washing off your makeup, putting on your most comfortable clothes, and being officially done with the day.

Sometimes that's it. That's the thing getting you through Tuesday.

And honestly, I think there's something lovely about that.

The Little Things Count

I think we sometimes underestimate just how much enjoyment there is in anticipating something small.

You can be having a perfectly ordinary Wednesday, doing perfectly ordinary Wednesday things, and somewhere in the back of your mind is the comforting knowledge that later, you're going to make a cup of tea, sit in your favourite chair, and do absolutely nothing of consequence.

Suddenly, Wednesday has a little something going for it.

Or maybe you've bought a particularly good snack and have been thinking about it periodically throughout the day. Not obsessively, of course. Just checking in on it mentally every couple of hours.

Still there? Excellent.

It's funny how little it can take sometimes.

A Saturday morning coffee when there's nowhere you need to be. Fresh bedsheets. A walk with someone you enjoy spending time with. A package arriving in the mail, even though you know perfectly well what's inside because you're the one who ordered it.

How ridiculous being human can be.

We can have entire calendars filled with important things, responsibilities, appointments, and plans, and somehow one of the highlights of our week is knowing we're having pancakes on Sunday.

I rather like that about us.

Not Everything Has to Be a Big Thing

There's a lot of emphasis on having goals, making plans, working toward something, and creating a life we're excited about.

And those things can be wonderful.

But I wonder if, somewhere along the way, we sometimes forget that we're also allowed to just enjoy our lives as they're happening.

Not every pleasant experience needs to be meaningful. Not every activity needs to contribute to our personal growth. Sometimes you can look forward to watching a slightly questionable television show simply because you enjoy it.

No deeper explanation required.

I think there's a particular kind of comfort in having small things scattered throughout the week that belong entirely to us.

Maybe it's stopping for a coffee on the way to work. Maybe it's a standing Friday night takeout tradition. Maybe it's knowing that when you get home, you can take off your shoes, wash your face, and not have to interact with another human being for a little while.

Even better if you've already decided what you're having for dinner.

One less decision. What a treat.

And perhaps that's part of what makes these little things so enjoyable. They don't ask much of us. We don't have to organize an elaborate outing, coordinate six people's schedules, or spend a small fortune to experience them.

They're just there, quietly making ordinary life a little nicer.

A Little Something for Tomorrow

Of course, not every day comes with something exciting on the horizon.

Some weeks are busy. Some are repetitive. Some seem to consist almost entirely of laundry, emails, grocery shopping, and wondering how the kitchen is messy again when you distinctly remember cleaning it yesterday.

But I think there's something to be said for occasionally giving ourselves a little thing to anticipate.

Nothing ambitious.

Maybe you decide that tomorrow morning you're going to take an extra ten minutes to enjoy your coffee. Maybe you pick up something nice for dinner. Maybe you make plans with a friend, start a new book, or save the last piece of cake for when you get home.

You don't even have to be particularly good at enjoying it. There's no need to turn this into another thing to accomplish.

It's just a little something waiting for you.

And sometimes, when life feels especially full, having one small thing that's simply about enjoyment can be surprisingly lovely.

So, what's something small you're looking forward to?

It doesn't have to be impressive. It doesn't even have to make sense to anyone else.

Maybe it's the weekend. Maybe it's your evening walk. Maybe it's that glorious moment when you get home, wash off your makeup, change into clothes that have absolutely no ambition, and settle in for the night.

Or maybe it's just knowing there's a really good sandwich in your immediate future.

I think that counts.

Actually, I think that counts quite a lot.
