We offer stigma-free, affirming counselling therapy for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals and couples.
Hello, and Welcome!
Finding an LGBTQIA2S+ Allied Therapist in Winnipeg That's Right for YOU
Stigma, in any form, is an impediment to the well-being of those who experience it. Given the stressors that LGBTQIA2S+ communities must confront, such as homophobia/monosexism/heterosexism, prejudice, coming out, and discrimination, finding a therapist who is LGBTQIA2S+ affirming is crucial to your personal well-being and growth.
You've known for a little while that you'd like some help, but haven't been able to get yourself to reach out. For many people, reaching out for help feels quite scary and vulnerable. And it makes sense that you'd be nervous to open up to a person you've never met.
Unfortunately, most of us were socialized into feeling even more vulnerability and shame when our struggles are related to sex, gender, and/or sexuality. Please know that we are so grateful you've stopped by to learn about our services.
One thing that can really help with this vulnerability is to find an LGBTQIA2S+ allied counsellor who is the right fit for you personally, and who specializes in this area. We realize this may seem obvious, especially since you're already here reading about our services. But, here's why we believe doing your research is important: a) We never assume we are the right fit for everyone, and b), many people struggle to get started with researching nearby LGBTQIA2S+ supports.
Here are some tips: Google phrases like "LGBTQ therapist near me", "sex positive therapist in Winnipeg," "gender identity counsellor in Winnipeg," or something similar.
We would be so happy to work with you. However, we're so glad you're doing this research before you choose your Winnipeg counsellor.
Do you live outside of the heteronormative-cisgender box? Could you use a safe space to process your feelings and assess your goals? Or maybe you’re seeking relationship counselling from someone who understands where you’re coming from.
If you can relate to any of the above, then you’ve come to the right place. No judgments. No stigmas. Just strong support with open ears.
The Source of Pain
Living in a world that was built on strict views around sex, gender roles, and heteronormative-cisgender social constructs, has not been and continues to not be easy for folks in the LGBTQIA2S+ communities. Although the original source of distress for LGBTQIA2S+ folks would often be entirely unrelated to sexual orientation or gender identity, the pain of living in our social constructs very often gets sexuality and gender identities wrapped up in the pain. As a result, in addition to experiencing the normal human struggles such as depression, anxiety, addictions, struggles with self-esteem, relationships etc., LGBTQIA2S+ folks often need to live with the pain of being told that your sexuality and/or gender identity is somehow the reason for your struggles and pain. This kind of stigma denies you the right to struggle with common human struggles.
Please know that you have the right to struggle without your struggles somehow being blamed on who you are—i.e. on your sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
How Can LGBTQIA2S+ Allied Counselling Therapy Help
At Empower Counselling Services Winnipeg we do not see sexual orientation and/or gender identity as a problem to be solved, but rather, as a reason to celebrate the many sexual orientations and/or gender identities and expressions. When our clients come to therapy for help with a specific issue, we do not assume that your problem is in any way related to your sexuality or gender identity. Our focus is to help with the issue(s) that YOU identify as bringing you to therapy.
In the same way that we do not assume a straight and/or cisgender person is sick because they identify as straight or cisgender, we do not believe that folks who identify with any of the LGBTQIA2S+ letter identities are sick because of their orientation or identity.
For example: If you come to therapy for help with addictions, mental health struggles, relationship problems, self-esteem or any other struggle, we will not assume that your struggle is somehow related to your gender identity or sexual orientation. We also won't assume they are not related. We will do our best to follow your lead.
However, if you have experienced sexual or gender discrimination, we will do everything we can to help you heal from this injustice.
What Brings LGBTQIA2S+ Folks to Therapy?
The quick answer is, the same plethora of struggles humans struggle with, such as:
◻️ Career struggles
◻️ Other mental health struggles
◻️ Family issues
However, due to a long history of patriarchy, capitalism, and strict heterosexual-cisgender social constructs, LGBTQIA2S+ folks often have to deal with additional struggles on top of the common human pains and struggles, such as:
◻️ Discrimination in the workplace
◻️ Sexual and gender discrimination
◻️ Discrimination from health care professionals
◻️ Religious abuse
◻️ Stereotypes on the news
◻️ Discrimination of many types
◻️ Negative assumptions
As LGBTQIA2S+ affirming therapists, we are committed to helping clients of all genders, sexual identities, and expressions feel not only safe but truly respected and supported.
If you’d like to explore stigma-free LGBTQIA2S+ allied therapy, we want you to know that we are here to help. Let's take the next step together.
