Hi, and Welcome!
We are Liona and Vern Kehler. We are super excited to announce our new partnership at Empower Counselling Services Winnipeg!
We're so glad you've stopped by today to learn about us. Please feel free to look around to see if our philosophy, approach to counselling therapy, and who we are connects with you.
We would also be more than happy to hear from you and answer any questions you may have.
As co-owners of Empower Counselling Services Winnipeg, our vision is to offer a space where people like you feel valued, respected, and honored. We strive to create a space where you can feel safe to embark on an empowering journey of healing and growth.
Meet Liona Kehler
Hi there, I'm Liona (she/her). Thanks so much for stopping by today.
I believe that people are, at their core, incredibly resourceful and resilient. We find a way to survive really difficult experiences the best way we are able to. Sometimes, we have really great resources and supports and the challenges we face are just a blip on the life-path.
At other times, the challenges are greater or we may not have the resources and support we need, making coping difficult. Warm, compassionate, and experienced therapeutic support can be so helpful for healing.
It is my goal to create a space that is safe and non-judgmental for you so you can get curious about your needs, desires, hopes, and challenges.
My Work Experience
I have had the privilege of working with people in the role as therapist for the last 7 years. During this time I have met with adolescents and adults, individuals, couples, and families as they worked towards growth and healing in their lives....
Meet Vern Kehler
Hi there, I'm Vern (he/him). Thanks kindly for stopping by.
I believe to heal, we need to be vulnerable—let ourselves be seen. To grow, we need to look inside. At its finest, both healing and growth happen in the company of another human, a safe space in the presence of a non-judgmental listening and supportive ear.
“If we can share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can't survive" ―
"You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending" ―
My Work Experience
I've been working in counselling and related fields for nearly 10 years. During this time I’ve had the privilege of walking with many individuals and couples through some of their most difficult seasons of life. I take a special interest in walking with folks who feel their life-story has collided with their optimal health, well-being, and happiness, regardless of what led to this experience...
Our Philosophy of Counselling Therapy
We believe each person deserves to live the empowered life they want and deserve. We also understand that sometimes there are obstacles that prevent people from living this desired life, but with the right help, the quality of life can almost always be significantly improved, and in many cases the problem can be entirely eliminated.
Our philosophy of counselling therapy is deeply informed by Person Centered Therapy. This means that our work is tailored to YOUR unique needs and desires. It also means that we work form a non-judgmental, non-oppressive perspective, which means you are welcome to come just as you are today. It also means that we believe in non-discriminatory inclusivity.
Examples include but are certainly not limited to:
- We work hard to create a zero-shame environment for you, leaving you space to work on the issues that led to, and maintain, your unique struggles
- We work hard to create a space in therapy that feels comfortable and safe. To achieve this, we like to use some humour and make our time together as enjoyable as possible, as human as possible
- Your life, your goals: We believe adults set their own life and health goals. While we will gently challenge and encourage you towards healing and making changes to improve your well-being, we respect how far you wish to go with counselling and with making your desired life-changes. Our goal is to work towards your empowerment
- If you struggle with addictions, you will not be required to stop your addiction in order to enter into or continue counselling with us. Remember that we are working towards YOUR goals, which may mean you want to quit but are not quite ready or you don't feel empowered to do so today; or your goal may be harm reduction at this time with the goal of making bigger decisions once you have more clarity on your long-term goals
However, in order to optimize therapeutic outcomes, we request that you refrain from coming to session under the influence of mind-altering substances such as drugs and alcohol. This will give you space and clarity of mind to engage in our shared work and will lead to stronger therapeutic outcomes for you

Our Story Matters
Each of us has a story. Some aspects of our story are written by our own choices, while other aspects are written by the impact of other people’s choices: parents, siblings, friends, classmates, lovers, and others. Some of this story is beautiful, some of it is beautifully complex; and some of it is so painful that it keeps us from living life fully and deeply. It keeps us stuck in a life filled with shame and guilt, not knowing which is our’ and which is someone else’s responsibility. It keeps us stuck in low self-esteem, in addictions, and in dissatisfying jobs and relationships. It keeps us from enjoying health and vitality.
One of the helpful things about counselling therapy is to have someone listen to you for once, truly listen. We believe listening is one of the world’s most scarce commodities. True listening is more than silence while someone else speaks. It is to engage fully in what is being said, leaving you feeling heard and seen. It’s like seeing yourself mirrored on still water when the storm subsides and the waves recede. This, then, makes space to clarify how to work through difficult life-stuff and to regain vitality and holistic health. It offers space to sort through the noise, the shame, and the guilt. It allows space to accept your responsibilities and let go of those that belong to someone else, and clarity to know the difference.
